The Military Museums (TMM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Goldsworthy as its new director, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the institution.
Goldsworthy is a recognized museum leader with 15 years of experience in museums and heritage associations across Canada. He holds a master’s degree in history from Queen’s University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto. He is also a published Canadian military historian and material culture expert who has served on several museum boards and committees.
"We are excited to have Ryan Goldsworthy as director," said Major Philip Makin, who served as Acting Director following the passing of former director of the museum - Major David Peabody in December 2024. "Ryan brings great expertise and experience, which will contribute to the museum's ongoing success and mission."
Before joining The Military Museums as director, Goldsworthy served as museum director & curator of the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI), one of Canada's largest military history museums. There, he enhanced the museum, collection, and profile, which included the creation of one of the most diverse and complete collections of Canadian military uniforms in existence.
He also served as Toronto’s manager of collections & research, leading the city’s first indigenous repatriation project; as director of collections & research at the Lorne Scots Regimental Museum; as an educator and historian at TMM (2015-2016); and as a contributor to the Royal Ontario Museum’s arms and armour collection.
On his vision for TMM: “The Military Museums has a dedicated team, an impressive collection, and a strong reputation as Canada’s second largest military museum. I see an opportunity to build on this foundation and help make it one of the finest in the country. By strengthening content, deepening community ties, and improving the visitor experience, we will reach more audiences and expand the museum’s impact.”
In addition to his professional background in museums and academia, Goldsworthy served as a Toronto firefighter and holds various first-responder and hazardous-materials technician credentials.
As the youngest person to serve as director of The Military Museums, Goldsworthy brings a strong commitment to museum leadership, public history and sector best practices. Goldsworthy has begun his role and is settling into Calgary.
