CIC Calgary: The Strait of Hormuz: The Cork in the Persian Gulf Bottle

In The Strait of Hormuz: The Cork in the Persian Gulf Bottle, Greg Walker will explore how recent conflict has triggered the most significant disruption to global energy supply since the 1970s and what it means for trade, markets, and global stability.

With a career spanning major energy projects across the globe, Greg brings firsthand insight into the intersection of geopolitics and energy systems. As tensions escalate, this conversation will unpack the real-world consequences of instability in the Gulf and why it matters far beyond the region.

Speaker Bio

Until the United States and Israel launched their attacks on Iran on February 28, most of us hadn’t given the Strait of Hormuz much thought. That has changed dramatically. The effective closure of the Strait has resulted in the largest disruption in global energy supply since the 1970s and is having major impacts on the global economy.

Greg Walker enjoyed a career in energy that spanned the globe. He worked in Australia, Angola, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Spain, Trinidad, the UK, and Vietnam. His PhD research at Cambridge University focused on fluid dynamics in fractures, as applied to the movement of magma. He also worked briefly in nuclear power, exploring long-term storage with UK Nirex and fusion research with the UKAEA at Culham. Most recently, he worked in Spain for Repsol, managing a team across five countries and continuing research on machine learning for data integration, which he began in 2003. Greg is now retired.

Greg will speak about the disruptions and impacts on global trade caused by the war with Iran.
