Dieppe Raid, POW 1942-45
Ray Gilbert (1922 - 2015) was born in Stettler, Alberta in 1922. In 1941 he enlisted with the 14th Army Tank Battalion (Calgary Regiment). In June 1941 he was sent overseas with the regiment to train in England with Churchill Tanks. In August 1942 the regiment participated in the fated Dieppe Raid. Ray was in one of the Churchill Tanks that landed on Red Beach and got stranded shortly after reaching shore. The crew used up all their ammunition, and were then forced to surrender. Ray spent the rest of the war as a POW.
