Jim Clacherie

Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve
1943-45

Jim Clacherie (1924 - 2019) was born in Calgary, Alberta on 27 Sept 1924. His father Alex was from Scotland and had fought for Canada during the First World War. Soon after Jim graduated from High School he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy. He was sent to Halifax for basic training and then served on Corvette's patrolling the west coast of Canada. He was promoted to Petty Officer and assigned to HMCS Prince Robert, a heavy-armed cruiser which at the time was the largest warship in the RCN.

The Prince Robert patrolled the south Pacific from Australia to the Philippines and as the war was ending Jim and his fellow sailors were present to help liberate Canadian prisoners of war in Hong Kong who had been in captivity for five years since he Battle of Hong Kong.
