Sgt (Ret’d) Ryan Flavelle was born in Boulder, Colorado. He enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 2001. In 2008 he deployed to Afghanistan as a digitization specialist attached to B Company, Second Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

He published a book entitled The Patrol (2011) about his experiences. He was promoted to sergeant in 2012, and subsequently retired from the military.
