About The Founders' Gallery

The University of Calgary Founders’ Gallery is the largest exhibition space in Canada dedicated to art exploring conflict and Canada’s military. Exhibitions also include broader contexts such home front impacts and global ripple effects.

The mission of Founders’ Gallery is to explore human conflict worldwide through art and artefacts from local and international, historic and contemporary sources. We give context to Canada’s military and its global contributions, inform viewers’ knowledge, and expand our understanding of conflict.

The 3,750 square foot Class A gallery space hosts a minimum of three exhibitions a year, curated primarily by the University of Calgary. The Military Museums normally curates one exhibition each year, and Founders’ also hosts guest curated projects and touring shows.

Founders’ Gallery is not a collecting institution and works closely with archives and collections at the University of Calgary, galleries within The Military Museums, and the community in general, to promote discourse, learning, research and discovery.

The Founders’ Gallery at The Military Museums was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex on 6 June 2009. In 2012, the University of Calgary and Department of National Defence entered into a partnership agreement and today the University continues to undertake responsibilities for curatorial direction and programming.
