Deployed: Canadian Army Reservists Overseas | Film Screening and Director Q&A

What is it really like to serve overseas as a Canadian Army Reservist?

Go beyond the headlines at a special screening of Deployed: Canadian Army Reservists Overseas, a feature-length documentary exploring the experiences of Canadian Reservists who volunteered for military missions abroad.

Through firsthand interviews, personal photographs, archival footage and scenes from military operations, the 90-minute film shares the stories of serving and retired Reservists deployed between the 1970s and 2000s, from peacekeeping missions in Egypt and Cyprus to operations in Africa, the former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan.

Following the screening, join filmmaker Colonel Michael Vernon (Retired) for a live Q&A exploring the stories behind the documentary, the filmmaking process and the experiences of Canada's Reserve soldiers.

Vernon brings a unique perspective to the film, drawing on his experience as a Canadian Army officer, CBC journalist and documentary filmmaker. He served with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the Calgary Highlanders and reported from conflict zones in Croatia and Afghanistan.

The screening complements the UCalgary Founders’ Gallery exhibition Deployed: Canadian Army Reservists Overseas, on display until January 3, 2027. Visitors can also explore military artefacts, operational footage and personal stories highlighting the contributions and sacrifices of Alberta's Reserve soldiers.
