CIC Calgary: The US National Security Strategy – How It Affects Canada

Join the CIC, Calgary Branch for an evening talk with Chris Kilford, a leading Canadian defence and foreign policy expert.

Over the past 18 months, Dr. Kilford has travelled extensively across Europe and Asia, including Turkiye, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Bhutan, Poland and Latvia. Along the way, he met with senior government officials, diplomats and defence leaders, including Canada’s ambassador to Turkiye, Taiwan’s vice minister of foreign affairs and Latvia’s defence minister. In Poland and Latvia, he also engaged with members of the Canadian Armed Forces supporting NATO operations and training Ukrainian military personnel.

Drawing on these first-hand experiences, Dr. Kilford will examine the new United States National Security Strategy and what it reveals about Washington’s view of its role in the world. He will connect these insights to the rapidly shifting global security environment and discuss what they mean for Canada’s defence and foreign policy choices.

A former senior officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, Dr. Kilford brings more than three decades of experience in defence analysis, diplomacy and military leadership. His career included deployments to Afghanistan and Turkiye, senior roles within the Department of National Defence and service as Canada’s defence attaché to Turkiye, with cross-accreditation to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan. He is a member of the national board of the Canadian International Council, president of the CIC Victoria branch and a sessional professor at the Canadian Forces College, where he teaches Canadian foreign and defence policy. He holds a PhD in history from Queen’s University, specializing in civil-military relations.

This event offers a timely and informed perspective on global security challenges and Canada’s place in an increasingly complex world.
