Air Force Roundel

The roundel is a circular identification mark painted on aircraft to identify them to other aircraft and ground forces. During the First World War, it was common for ground forces to fire on every aircraft they saw, so the need for identification marking became necessary.

The British roundel became standard on RAF aircraft in 1915, and the Royal Canadian Air Force roundel, upon which it was based, was adopted in 1946.
