New Exhibition Alert - To Oldman River

If you're looking for fun things to do this weekend, then we've got just the thing that will keep you entertained - a new must-check-out exhibition at the Founders' Gallery: "To Oldman River: New additions to UCalgary's Military Collection."

To Oldman River shows important new artefacts from UCalgary's Libraries and Cultural Resources' holdings at The Military Museums (TMM). The exhibition includes firearms, uniforms, medals, relics, and archival film from the mid-1800s through the First World War, encompassing a massive swath of Alberta's military history.

To Oldman River explores how Canada's military changed from a militia model after Confederation to a permanent armed force that can fully take part in international conflicts. These artefacts, together with those of several other personalities, bear witness to diverse conflicts such as the North-West Resistance, the Boer War, and the First World War. Between them, they speak to the development of Canada's modern armed forces.

Artefacts and archives from some of Alberta's most celebrated military personalities are also featured, with an emphasis on three: Sir Sam Steele, Frederick Bagley, and Wilfrid Reid May. Some interesting things on display include medals given to Steele, horseshoes and spurs saved by Bagley from his journey west as the youngest original member of the North-West Mounted Police, and pieces of Manfred von Richthofen's (the Red Baron's) airplane kept by May.

To Oldman River features artefacts formerly located at the Glenbow Museum in downtown Calgary. The new exhibition is on display in the Founders' Gallery until April 2023.

The Founders' Gallery is located in the Military Museums and is managed by the University of Calgary. It is open Monday–Sunday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children 7–17, and free for children under 7 and veterans. Tickets can be pre-purchased on Showpass. So get your tickets today and come check it out this weekend!

You can also enjoy a good weekend brunch buffet at The Inn on Officer's Garden on Saturday and Sunday, and don't forget we have new games in the snack room at the museum to keep your little ones entertained. You can also join us on Saturday, November 26th from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Military Museums to take part in an airplane-making craft with our volunteer Avery! Free with entry into the museums.
